Features of Carpenter Pencils

A Brief Introduction to Carpenters PencilThe carpenters pencil are used for carpentry work. These have some notable differences than that of the ordinary and regular ones which are as follows;

 Difference

 The ordinary pencils have a round shape or are generally hexagonal. The carpentry pencils are either elliptical or rectangular. The carpenters pencil is designed in such a way that it does not roll away and have a large surface area which makes them easy to grip and hold.

 Usage

These pencils are used to draw both thick lines as well as thin lines. Thick or bold and thin lines can be drawn by rotating these carpenters pencils. These can be used on smooth and rough surfaces. The former is used for making lines on even surfaces whereas latter is used for uneven surfaces. When these pencils are notched in the middle they draw two parallel lines simultaneously.

 They are used are for job sites so they are made extremely durable. The lead of the carpenter's pencil is made stronger, tougher and denser as compared to the regular pencils. These leads make the marking easier for the people who work at the construction sites as these pencils work well on concrete and stone.

 How to Sharpen?

 They are sharpened by hand as their size does not fit the round-shaped sharpener. Below is the technique by which they are sharpened.

 Grab it firmly and make sure that your hand is away from the corner of the pencil is to be sharpened or you will hurt yourself. A chisel or a utility knife can be used for sharpening.

 With the help of your other hand use the sharpening tool and hold it at an angle of 45 degrees against the pencil. Hold the tool half an inch away from the area you have to sharpen. For your safety keep the sharpening tool away from your body. Slice the wood of the pencil off. Start doing so from the narrow and thin sides and after sharpening then move to the wide side. Continue the process until the lead of the pencil is exposed. When quarter-inch of lead is visible then stop the sharpening. Always be extra careful with the sharpening tool so that you don’t hurt or harm yourself.

 The sharpness and the pointiness of the lead can be controlled and adjusted with the help of the sand paper. For doing so, place it on its flat side and its tip on the sand paper. After leaning the carpenters pencil upwards, drag its tip again on the sand paper.

After doing it, once repeat the process again and again till the required sharpness or the thickness is obtained.
